IATSE Local 129 Safe Workplace Statement 2018

IATSE Local 129 is committed to your safety at work. This commitment includes feeling safe from all forms of harassment. Harassment is any behaviour the denigrates, demeans, humiliates, or embarrasses a person, and that a reasonable person should have known to be unwelcome..
Harassment is harmful because it attacks the dignity and self-respect of the victim. In the workplace it can negatively affect both the victim’s ability to perform their duties and the work environment as a whole. Harassment that is based on race, colour, sex, religion, political affiliation, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, marital or family status, record of offences, or pregnancy, or any other basis will not be tolerated.
Harassment can come from any quarter; fellow members, permits, employers and members of road crews working in our facilities. If you are in a situation where you feel you are being harassed, go to your Head or Steward Immediately or call the IATSE Safety Hotline (844 IA AWARE/ 844-422-9273). You can also reach out to any member of the Executive. Every effort will be made to support workers who report workplace abuse in a dignified and respectful way.
In addition, our Local cannot and will not accept, tolerate, or defend behaviour from any member that violates the rights of another member, co-worker, or members of the public. Our representation of members will always be available, but we will not condone violations of another’s rights.
Abuse has in the past become acceptable under the cover of silence or in the guise of humor, neither of these past practices are acceptable any more. As a labor union we were founded upon equality, respect, and fairness for all. We must work with each other and our employers to be vigilant that our actions, attitude, and language promote an equal and welcoming environment for all people.
The IATSE celebrates the diversity of society and is striving to promote and reflect that diversity within this organization. Safety is one of the pillars that the IATSE is built on. Through training, safety committees, safety programs, and participating in standards writing, the IATSE International leadership is committed to making the jobs members show up for are as safe as possible.

In solidarity
